Gregory Paolini Biography
of an Artisan
|
Gregory Paolini has been designing and handcrafting custom furniture and cabinetry for over a decade, with his work having been featured in several books, magazines, and newspapers, including the preeminent Fine Woodworking Magazine. In addition to making sawdust and wood shavings, Gregory has authored freelance articles and advice columns for several publications, including Fine Woodworking and Cabinetmaker magazines. Gregory has received “Invitations to Exhibit” at the prestigious Providence Fine Furnishing Show in Providence, RI – Arguably one of the top ten juried shows in the United States. Born and raised in Buffalo, NY, Gregory relocated in 2006 to the mountains of Western North Carolina, with his wife Ramona, and his shop assistants (Stu the rottweiler and almost a dozen ferrets). Their home is a short drive from the historic Grove Park Inn.
“I like to design all of the pieces I craft – Even my reproductions. Very rarely do I craft an “Exact” reproduction. Even those pieces are changed in some way: A change in dimensions, or the addition of a concealed compartment. I like to add something to the design, and improve upon it.”
Gregory Paolini began his woodworking career by building upon a passion, and out of necessity. “I never really had any formal training in woodworking. I inherited some hand tools, and began making some really, really bad things. That was over two decades ago.” Gregory chuckles. “I was blessed in a way – I had hand tools but couldn’t afford power tools. I was forced to learn traditional, old world craftsmanship: Hand planing, joinery, dovetailing. I salvaged wood from pallets and where ever I could, and put into practice the techniques I learned from books.”
Today, Gregory expands upon his woodworking knowledge by continuously pushing his designs to the next level, and new horizons, while keeping a mindful eye of the details. “I pay a lot of attention to the little things – I’ve come to realize that often it is the littlest things that make the biggest difference." Gregory closed with the following philosophy: " I accept that no man’s work will ever be perfect, but it’s my responsibility to craft each piece as close to perfect as my creator will allow.”
