Question
Q: Gregory, I’m reproducing your oak finish, and have procured the stain and dye you recommend. It looks like there are a lot of options for choosing a solvent to dilute the dye in though: Alcohol, Toluol mineral spirits, Lacquer thinner, water, which is the best solvent to use?
Eric – North Carolina
A: Eric, the aniline dyes I use are made by J.E. Moser, available from Woodworker.com, and are produced in three variations: Oil soluble, Water Soluble, and Alcohol soluble. What distinguishes the dyes between the various solvents, is the letter that preceded the color number. Typical colors may be an A1275, which indicates the dye is alcohol soluble. L2413, or any color which begins with an L, is an oil soluble dye.
At Gregory Paolini Design, we use W series, water soluble, aniline dyes because they are non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and super safe for everyone, and everything around them. So if you’re duplicating our antique mission finish with the W1430 dye, simply dissolve the dye powder in hot (but not quite boiling) water: 1 oz of dye, to 1 quart of water.
Searching
for hard to find Lumber, Plywood, Hardware?
Even a Drawer or a Door?
We spend a lot of time trying to find the prettiest lumber, odd types of plywood and sheet goods, and functional hardware such as under mount drawer slides, or European hinges. So when we find a good source, we buy a bunch! And a lot of times, we buy a little more than we need.
Because some many of our students, and visitors to Gregory Paolini Design have asked us about it, we’re now offering Lumber, plywood, and functional hardware for sale, to folks visiting our Canton, North Carolina workshop.
Now, we’re not a big box store, so if you need a pressure treated 2x4, well, we won’t be able to help you out. But if you’re looking for a sheet of 3/8 bendable plywood, or prefinished cabinet grade plywood, give us a shout. We normally carry a variety of sheet goods, including Baltic Birch, European hinges, under-mount drawer slides, a variety of domestic lumber, and our Quarter sawn white oak lumber has some of the most spectacular figure you’ll ever see! We’ll even plane, joint, and rough size your lumber or plywood for you.
Need
a drawer, or a door made for a project you’re working on?
We can help you out there too! We’re
currently working on a menu of our wood species, inventory, and offerings, so if
we can help you out, Just shoot us an email, or give us a call at 828-627-3948
